Blacklist Hunter

Blacklist Hunters pursue criminals and other wanted people. Kurapika’s search for the Phantom Troupe makes the specialty central to his story, while Lippo and Binolt connect it to the Hunter Exam and its darker challenges.

Beast Hunter

Hunter License, Rookie status and star rank

Passing the Hunter Exam earns a Hunter License, which opens access to restricted areas, information and other privileges. That qualification is separate from the work a Hunter later chooses; the official Hunter x Hunter series overview introduces the license in that broader context.

Rookie Hunter describes a Hunter who is still early in the profession. Gon Freecss, Killua Zoldyck and Leorio Paradinight all occupy that early stage of the story. Gon is not given a separate professional specialization here: he is a Rookie Hunter in status and an Enhancer in Nen, which answer different questions.

Provisional Hunter and Temp Hunter describe temporary arrangements tied to particular story circumstances. They tell you something about a Hunter’s authorization, not the kind of work that Hunter does.

The star system measures recognition rather than raw strength. Single-Star, Double-Star and Triple-Star Hunters have earned distinction through achievement, responsibility and contribution. Triple-Star is the highest named star level, but it does not make every Triple-Star Hunter stronger than every one-star Hunter.

Hunter types and Nen categories are different

Nen categories describe how a person uses aura. The six categories are Enhancement, Emission, Transmutation, Conjuration, Manipulation and Specialization. Gon is an Enhancer, but that does not make him an Enhancement Hunter. His Nen category describes his abilities, while Rookie describes his early professional status.

That is why a Treasure Hunter can also be a powerful fighter, and why a medical or musical specialist can use Nen without changing professional fields. The labels overlap in one character, but they answer different questions.
