Spy x Family is one of the most anticipated anime series currently airing, with the first season being one of the most anticipated releases of 2022. Today let’s take a look at the real-life locations of Spy x Family. The locations were determined through anime scene recognition, Google Maps, and public transportation. This page is intended to be a comparative research tool as well as a guide for readers’ future seichijunrei.

Spy x Family Plot

The plot revolves around Westalis’ top spy, Twilight, and his most difficult mission yet, Operation Strix. He’s been charged with following the paranoid hermit and National Unity Party leader, Donovan Desmond, to keep him from jeopardizing the delicate peace between the nations.

But, because Donovan only appears on rare occasions at his son’s famous school, Eden Academy, Twilight is compelled to materialize a family and have his child enroll in the school within a week’s time.

Twilight is successful in gaining a wife and daughter under the alias Loid Forger and the phony profession of a psychiatrist.

Where Does Spy x Family Take Place?

Spy x Family takes place during the Cold War when Germany was divided into West and East. Westalis is a fictional country based in West Germany, whereas Ostania is located in East Germany (East is actually referred to as Ost in German).

Loid’s Travel from West to East

Loid is prepared to travel to Berlint in the anime which is Berlin in real life. Based on the ceiling structure and the clock in the platform in the image below, he has most certainly left Cologne Central Station.

Another one of the real life locations of Soy x Family you can clearly observe is this building structure. A bird’s-eye view panned towards Ostania, and a fortress was revealed (a foreshadowing?). That castle was inspired by Hohenzollern Castle, a hilltop fortress on the Hohenzollern mountain. However, because the castle is in Southern Germany, it cannot be seen from the railway.

Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church

The next real-life location of Spy x Family is Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church which is one of Berlin’s most iconic sites, therefore it’s no wonder they drew it in the background. The anime appears to have based the tower on the existing church building, while the original tower has a long pointed roof (check the images below).

Friedrichstrasse Station & Alexanderplatz Station

Yor and Loid’s reported meeting location in episode 2 appears to be a cross between Friedrichstrasse Station (upper right) and Alexanderplatz Station (bottom right). The fictitious railway station has a pointed arc roof like Friedrichstrasse.

Because I couldn’t discover a cubic clock in the neighborhood, I suspect it was inspired by the clock in Alexanderplatz, which was only one train station away.

Conclusion
