8 Great Gurren Lagann Mechs, Ranked – Manganime Tradnow

Gurren Lagann is known for many things, senseless bravery, Yoko Littner’s dress-code, intense battles and mechs. It is one of Studio Gainax’s most successful babies.  Many rank it as the best mecha anime of all time, though Evangelion is also deemed an even match. If you’ve seen Gurren Lagann, you know that although the humans are the heart behind the show, the mechs deserve recognition. Without further delay, here are 8 Great Gurren Lagann Mechs.

8. King Kittan

This mech, as the name suggests, is piloted by Kittan, the oldest of the Black Siblings. Its design alone puts it on this list. It has a pretty unique design, but considering that this is Gurren Lagann, that’s saying something.

King Kittan is a yellow, star-shaped mech, which also uses its pointy edges as weapons. It doesn’t have as much firepower as Gurren Lagann, for sure, but it packs a punch. Unlike other great Gurren Lagann mechs, it can fuse (sort of) with the gunmen of his two siblings to evolve.

7. Dai-Gunzan/Dai-Gurren

Also called Dai-Gurren, after Kamina led the team to take over it, was the property of Thymilph. Being a gunman of one of Lordgenome’s generals, it boasts incredible strength. It is essentially a walking fortress which can battle and house other gunmen, being much larger than regulars.

Speed doesn’t come with the package, unfortunately, and it has an incredibly wacky design. It looks like a battleship with hands and tiny legs. In truth, the Dai-Gunzan was never defeated; it was only controlled by Lagann and usurped. That alone is a testament to the behemoth it is among great Gurren Lagann mechs.

6. Sayrune

Owned by another of Lordgenome’s generals, Adiane, Sayrune swoops onto the list. Her gunman was made in the model of its owner to be quite elegant and more feminine. Its design may also be a generous nod to Kill la Kill’s “Junketsu”.

Adiane is a scorpion lady, and her mech takes after her having 2 forms: Humanoid and Scorpion. In the humanoid form, it has wings to fly, and in both forms, it is equally capable of underwater movement. These attributes make it the most versatile gunman among great Gurren Lagann mechs.

5. Enki

Piloted by Viral, Kamina’s self-proclaimed rival, Enki has demonstrated continuous resolve through its adaptability and resilience. Throughout the series, this gunman has gone through numerous revisions, always returning stronger.

It has never been truly obliterated either, and it earned a spot among great Gurren Lagann mechs, assisting Simon in the Anti-Spiral war. Enki is the product of many amendments to gunman technology, giving it attributes like slender segmented limbs for fluid movement.

It is a white gunman equipped with a number of projectiles and blades, and fires beams from the ring on its head. Fun fact, that ring was broken off and became part of Gurren Lagann.

4. Einzer & Kidknuckle

Tied for one spot, these gunmen are piloted by the Coega brothers; Kidd and Iraak. Much like King Kittan, they are strikingly unique in design. Einzer is a blue reptilian-esque gunman sporting a cannon which also serves as a turbo booster, making it a speedster.

Uniquely, it has a seat merged to its top to house the famous sniper, Yoko Littner. Kidknuckle, on the other hand, is a pistol-wielding mecha monkey. Together, the Coega brothers wield the most nimble and fastest mechs around. What is there not to love about these great Gurren Lagann mechs?

3. Lazengann

This mech belongs to Lordgenome, the strongest spiral energy wielder after Simon. The gunman in itself resembles Gurren Lagann, as well as Enki, with a black colour swap. It has two faces unlike Enki, and can only summon drills as Gurren Lagann can.

What’s interesting though, is that part of Lazengann’s power comes from Lordgenome’s concubines stored in his drills. This is in order to compensate for the lack of energy from a second pilot. As tenacious as it was, it stood no match for Lagann, but drilled its place as a great Gurren Lagann mech into our minds forever.

2. Gurren Lagann

Second, on our list of great Gurren Lagann mechs, we have the titular mech of the series, our star. This gunman is a fusion of Gurren, Kamina’s mech made of three gunmen, and Lagann, Simon’s gunman.

Its two pilots are Simon and Kamina, the latter is actually one of anime’s most popular characters. Although this fusion was initially accidental, it opened new doors to Team Dai-Gurren, and Lagann in particular.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to stop certain deaths, but it proved its worth all the way to the series’ end. This mech needs no introduction. We can hear the “Who the hell do you think I am?” echoing already.

1. Lagann

Placing Lagann as a separate entity from Gurren Lagann on our list may seem very tongue-in-cheek on our part. But hear us out, it’s quite undeniable. Considering the fact that Lagann can control and/or fuse itself with any other gunman makes it a beast.

It’s a prime example of not judging a book by its cover. Leagues ahead of all great Gurren Lagann mechs, Lagann is literally the “key”. Piloted by Simon, his drill is truly the one which will pierce the heavens.
